Why this source was used
The IECC (and IRC Chapter 11) imposes energy-code requirements on renovation work on a component-by-component basis. Key triggers include: replacement windows must meet current U-factor/SHGC; exposing insulation cavities triggers current R-value requirements; HVAC replacement must meet current efficiency standards; converting unconditioned space to conditioned is treated as an addition. Unlike new construction, which must comply holistically, renovation triggers are selective — making it essential to understand which scopes of work activate which requirements.
