Abatement

Definition: The identification, containment, removal, or encapsulation of hazardous materials in a building — primarily lead-based paint, asbestos-containing materials (ACM), and mold. Abatement work is governed by federal regulations: the EPA RRP Rule for lead paint in pre-1978 housing, the Asbestos NESHAP for ACM, and OSHA standards for worker protection. Mold remediation follows industry standards (IICRC S520). Abatement must occur before renovation activities that would disturb the hazardous material, and requires certified professionals, containment systems, HEPA filtration, and regulated waste disposal.
